Unknown Pleasures: Joy Division

Unknown Pleasures: Joy Division

Unknown Pleasures is the debut album from Joy Division

Released 15/06/79 by Factory Records

I was browsing through the UK Charts website, and came across an article about Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures. I was never the biggest Joy Division fan, but was delighted about the re-issue. It’s also hard to believe it’s 40 years old.

Joy Division only released two albums, before reforming as New Order following Ian Curtis’s passing in May 1980, but managed to create quite the following – maybe even cult status? Curtis’s tragic fate, and the brief career certainly fuels this. Such an abrupt end often leaves audiences wanting more. And whilst this re-issue might not be more in the sense of new, it certainly is more.

The original album sleeve is commanding in its own right, black background with white detail, but the re-issue reverses this and adds beautiful ruby red LP.

It is one of the most striking designs I have come across, and I must have it.

There are quite a few picture and/or coloured LPs coming out this year. I’ll collate my favourite ones for another post.
