Vinyl Record Day: August 12th ...

The 12th August every year marks Vinyl Record Day, so what's the latest on the Barton Collection?

The 12th August every year marks Vinyl Record Day as established by the Vinyl Record Day organisation.

Personally, I prefer Vinyl Record Day over Record Store Day, even though the latter usually highlights vinyl. Unfortunately Record Store Day has become more of a thing rather than providing (long term) support for independent record shops. I wrote about it in ‘I, Me, Mine?’ so I won’t delve deeper into it now, but Vinyl Record Day could perhaps provide a different perspective. Either way, it provides an excellent backdrop for another day of sorting through the Barton Collection.

Gary J. Freiberg: Founder of Vinyl Record Day

I’ve had a couple of questions asking if I’m still sorting through it. Yes, I am. Yesterday I brought home the final LPs, but even without them I am still working through the first batch. I’m working in two ways at the moment. Firstly, I am trying just to store them in a secure and suitable way, while still having access to my (home) office. They also have to be stored toddler proof… Secondly, I am cataloguing them. At the moment I’m noting artist, title, year, label, catalogue number, condition, country, and additional notes (for instance, missing inner sleeve, or oval sticker indicating import bought from UK dealer). Noting the country of release is particularly important since the myth would have you believe they are US LPs. Both these tasks are relatively straightforward in theory, but the reality is time-consuming, and progress is slow – but rewarding.

My aim is to have the catalogue complete, or close to completion, by September. I start teaching again is September, which means I will have to re-focus my research as I will have less time with the physical collection. Ultimately I’m hoping to create an online resource on Veronica’s Vinyl with more information about the individual records, but that is still some time away. Until then I will continue to post tasters here on Veronica's Vinyl and on my Instagram timeline.
